  • What Are Alms?
    What Are Alms?
The word alms comes from a Greek word which means pity or mercy.  We're told in scripture to give alms, which means to give money or goods to those in need - to have pity or mercy on those less fortunate than ourselves. But scripture also tells that when we give "do not blow a trumpet...but to do it in secret."
Giving of ourselves can be difficult, but God will never be outdone and will repay us tenfold; perhaps not in money, but in a life of blessing.
    • Almsgiving is synonymous with mercy and compassion, being attuned to the suffering heart.
When fasting from food, we are encouraged to take the money we would have spent on a meal and give it to a worthy charity that helps the poor.  While this is always a good thing,

We'd also like to suggest other ways of almsgiving
(that focus more on mercy and compassion than money)
that calls us to step outside our comfort zone a little more.

      Check out the suggestions below!

Practice the Spiritual Works of Mercy
Remember that Lent is all about conversion and while practicing the spiritual works of mercy isn't technically Almsgiving, it's worth taking the time for a refresher course.

        Send Cards to Shut-Ins
" 'Tis better to give than receive." We've all heard this phrase repeatedly, but in truth, if we have difficulty receiving God's mercy in our own lives, it may not be easy to show mercy toward others.

        Support Parish Ministries
The mission of our two parishes is simple: Save Souls!  One of the ways in which we do that is to offer different ministries that support our personal growth strengthening us to "make disciples of all nations."  If we don't strengthen ourselves we will quickly grow weary.
